Cats 10 & 2 years - should I try?

I came here looking for info before I invest in the kit, and I have appreciated reading all the comments. I'd love to have some feedback on whether my situation is beyond help.

I have a 10-year-old overweight male and 2-year-old female. When he gets stressed or jealous he poops in wrong places (my bed is his first choice, then rugs, then sofa). The female does not appear to have picked up his bad habit (so far). They are not very particular about covering their poop or pee, and seem to do their scratching outside the litter boxes. I work long hours, so they are unattended 9 to 11 hours a day, and I resorted to draping the sofa and bed with vinyl during the day.

How difficult will it be to train them both? Thanks for any suggestions!
